I showed Xander my blog post on his golf lesson we were working on, and that led us into a new topic: the mental side of playing and competing in golf.
It’s something we don’t always talk about enough, but here’s what I’ve learned after years of playing and watching others play.
In tournament golf, the word that matters most is patience.
Golf is a game where momentum shifts constantly. One hole can feel like the start of a comeback, while the next can test your confidence to the core. When the pressure is high, patience is the difference between hanging in and falling apart.
Here’s how it plays out:
- If you’re not playing well → stay patient and wait for the opportunity. A good swing, a lucky bounce, or a putt that finally drops can turn the round around. But only if you don’t give up before it comes.
- If you’re playing well but not scoring → stay patient, because the breaks will come. Golf has a way of evening things out. Keep doing the right things and trust the math.
- If you’re playing well and scoring → stay patient and trust what’s working. Don’t change a thing. Many players either push too hard or start protecting the score; that’s when mistakes slip in. Stick with your plan.
And then there are the nerves.
Everyone feels them — on the first tee, over a short putt, or when the leaderboard is tight. Nerves are natural. The key isn’t to fight them, but to transform them into excitement.
To play well, you have to learn to substitute the word “nervousness” with “excitement” — in your thoughts and in your speech. That one shift changes how your body reacts, how your mind settles, and how you approach the next shot.
And through it all, remember this:
You’re doing great. You’re on the right path. The hard part is staying on it without wavering. There will always be self-doubt and plenty of friendly advice from others—but patience and consistency win out. Keep trusting your work.
That’s the mental game.
⛳ Lesson Recap
- Patience when struggling → wait for the opportunity.
- Patience when steady → trust that the breaks will come.
- Patience when scoring → stick to what’s working.
- Nerves into excitement → shift your words, shift your mindset.
- Stay the course → trust patience and consistency more than outside noise.
Do these, and you’ll see it in your tournament play.
